A Walking Cricket First in Berkshire

June 13, 2024

Purley on Thames Cricket Club are the latest club in Berkshire to try their hand at Walking Cricket. Despite only beginning at the start of May, the team decided the best way to learn more about the game was to test themselves in a fixture against another club. Holyport Cricket Club duly accepted the offer and Wednesday 5th June was the date agreed by both clubs for the match to take place.

A sunny morning met the players as they arrived at Goosecroft Recreation Ground. All the players had a chat and a cup of tea before the toss took place at 10.45am. Holyport captain Dale decided to have a bowl first on what looked to be a seamer friendly wicket.

Despite it being their first game, Purley had some invaluable experience on their side and put together a terrific batting display to score 126 runs. Holyport taking 6 wickets in reply. This meant the overall target of 97 would be required for Holyport to create history and take home the first ever win between two Berkshire Walking Cricket sides.

Using their experience, Holyport were able to hit the ball into the gaps and score freely. A few wickets dragged Purley back into the game and with 1 over remaining 2 runs were required. Purley captain Martin Bishop had the challenge of defending the total and despite his best efforts, a couple of late boundaries saw Holyport get to 109.

After the game Martin said “we were delighted to play a friendly match against Holyport today. Many thanks to both Berkshire Cricket and Holyport for the opportunity, we can’t wait for the return match.”

Walking Cricket is a fantastic way for people aged 55+ to stay active. No previous experience is required and all equipment is provided. Berkshire Cricket would love to see more cricket clubs offer Walking Cricket so if you would like some advice on how to get started, please get in touch.
