Summer 2024 has been a successful one for Purley on Thames Walking Cricket group. Starting back in May, the club were introduced to the idea of Walking Cricket by Berkshire Cricket off the back of the success of other local clubs such as Holyport Cricket Club.
Since their first session on May 8th , the club has run a session every week. 8 people attended the first session and this number has now grown to 21 registered players, including 5 ladies.
The group have made terrific progress and have competed in 3 fixtures over the course of the season. Having lost the first two, they showed brilliant dedication and hard work to achieve their first ever win in their last outing against Holyport. They have one final fixture for the outdoor season against the Purley Ladies team on Friday 6th September.
The clubs’ GoodExchange project has just achieved its aim to raise sufficient funds to buy their own kit and run indoor sessions at Cotswold Sports Centre throughout the coming winter. This will help to continue building the success that the club has seen over the summer.
Everybody in the group has enjoyed participating in the walking cricket and there is also a fantastic social element to the group which they all love being part of.
A huge well done must go to Martin Bishop at Purley on Thames CC for all his hard work in promoting and developing the group. Similar to Holyport, the club are looking for new opponents in 2025. Berkshire Cricket actively encourages all clubs to give walking cricket a go at their club.
