Berkshire Storm into Cup Semi-Finals with Emphatic Victory at Unbeaten Buckinghamshire

Buckinghamshire CCC v Berkshire – National Counties Cup Quarter-Final, High Wycombe

Berkshire produced one of their finest performances of the season to book their place in the National Counties Cup semi-finals with a commanding 124-run victory over previously unbeaten Buckinghamshire at High Wycombe.

After losing the toss on a green, seaming surface that appeared tailor-made for the home side’s attack, Berkshire were asked to bat first. Early indications suggested batting would be far from straightforward as Buckinghamshire’s new-ball bowlers found movement and bounce.

The visitors found themselves under pressure at 55-2 after Edward Bragg struck twice, removing both Johnny Connell (9) and Rhys Lewis (32). However, Berkshire’s response was outstanding.

James Isbell and Charlie Dunnett combined to wrestle control away from the hosts with a superb third-wicket partnership worth 161 runs. Isbell was particularly impressive, compiling a fluent 83 from 90 balls, striking 11 fours and a six. Alongside him, Dunnett anchored the innings magnificently with 77 from 96 deliveries, finding the boundary seven times.

Their partnership transformed the innings and laid the platform for a powerful finish. When both batters departed in quick succession with the score over 220, Berkshire still had plenty in reserve.

Euan Woods provided exactly the acceleration required, finishing unbeaten on 47 from just 31 balls, while Ben Salter added a blistering 34 from 25 deliveries including two sixes. The pair ensured Berkshire made full use of the final ten overs as the visitors closed on an imposing 308-5 from their 50 overs.

With scoreboard pressure established, Berkshire’s bowlers seized the initiative immediately.

Toby Greatwood struck the first blow, bowling Archie Dodds, before Andy Rishton delivered a devastating spell that effectively settled the contest. Rishton exploited the helpful conditions superbly, claiming 4-20 from his 10 overs and reducing Buckinghamshire to 38-5.

The home side’s hopes rested with George Harvey and Josh Lincoln, who mounted a spirited recovery. Harvey struck 51 while Lincoln counter-attacked impressively for 61, adding 78 for the sixth wicket.

However, Berkshire never allowed the game to drift. Euan Woods followed up his vital contribution with the bat by claiming 3-50, removing Harvey, Teddy Fleming and Edward Bragg to extinguish any thoughts of a comeback.

Sulaiman Akhtar then wrapped up the innings with two late wickets as Buckinghamshire were dismissed for 184 in 39.5 overs.

The comprehensive victory ended Buckinghamshire’s unbeaten run and underlined Berkshire’s credentials as genuine contenders for the National Counties Cup title.
