Berkshire Sign Tommy Sturgess from Cornwall CCC

March 5, 2024

Our Men’s 1st XI are pleased to announce the signing of Tommy Sturgess from Cornwall CCC.

We spoke to Head Coach Tom Lambert about our new signing:

“Firstly and most importantly id like to thank Cornwall and in particular Godfrey Furse for giving his and their blessing for Tommy to join us this summer. He’s a fantastic product of their pathway and someone we’re excited to now have in our set up. Tommy will be moving into our area through his job and will be playing club cricket at Wargrave CC so discussions began on the possibility of him joining us.”

Tommy excelled through age group and EPP cricket for Cornwall before heading to Wellington School in Somerset for his 6th form education. From there he was offered a place on the Surrey Academy where he continued his cricketing education and played 2nd XI games for the 1st class county. Last summer he was a part of Cornwall’s promotion to Western Division 1 and played a significant role in their run to the national T20 final against Staffordshire where they were pipped to the title off the last ball.

“Seam bowlers at NCCA level don’t grow on trees so we’re very fortunate to be able to welcome Tommy into our group. With Tom Nugent only available for one format moving forward it felt the right opportunity had presented itself to get Tommy on board to add experience and quality to the attack. With our young seamers continuing to develop at the Middlesex Academy under Mark Lane and Jamie Hewitt, their priority and workloads in the main rest there for now so being able to add such quality to go alongside senior bowlers such as Tom, Andy Rishton, Toby Greatwood and Mungo Russell was vitally important for the long summer ahead where workload expectations on our lads is extremely high.”

On Tommy, Tom goes on to say….

“I’ve known of Tommy since he was young and more recently on a personal level when he was part of my NCCA XI who represented England out in the ECC European Cup in October. He’s a brilliant competitor and great young man to work with. He wears his heart on his sleeve and works hard. He’s honest and determined to make the very best of himself as a bowler. He’s my kind of a player, he’s by no means perfect on or off the field but his will to win and make the most of himself mean you fully trust he’ll run through walls for you. That’s all I ever ask. Welcome aboard Tommy.”

Our first chance to see Tommy in action will be the 7th April when our men’s squad squad travel to the Welsh capital to take on Cardiff UCCE in a double headed T20 day on our opening pre season game of the summer.
