The three-day NCCA Championship clash between Oxfordshire and Berkshire at Thame produced a hard-fought draw, with both sides showcasing impressive batting strength and resilient performances across the three days.

Day One – Oxfordshire build solid platform

 

After winning the toss, Oxfordshire elected to bat first and made steady progress through their top order. Patient partnerships allowed them to blunt Berkshire’s attack, and despite regular breakthroughs, Oxfordshire compiled a competitive 328 for 9 declared from their 90 overs. The innings was built on disciplined batting, supported by contributions across the order. Berkshire’s bowlers stuck to their task, collecting three bowling bonus points, but were unable to force a collapse.

Day Two – Berkshire dominate with the bat

 

In reply, Berkshire’s batsmen seized control, piling on an imposing 476 for 7 declared in just under 90 overs thanks to 122 from Johnny Connell and an outstanding 203 Not Out from Rhys Lewis. Their innings was marked by aggressive stroke play and well-constructed partnerships that wrestled the momentum away from Oxfordshire. Four batting bonus points were secured, while Oxfordshire’s bowlers struggled to make inroads against the depth of Berkshire’s lineup. The declaration gave Berkshire a 148-run first-innings lead and placed them in a strong position going into the final day.

Day Three – Oxfordshire fight back to save the game

 

Facing a deficit, Oxfordshire responded superbly in their second innings. Their top and middle order produced a collective effort to blunt Berkshire’s attack, and they closed on 354 for 6 from 118 overs, ensuring the match ended in a draw. Berkshire’s bowlers toiled hard and claimed four bowling points, but Oxfordshire’s resistance denied them a chance of victory.

Conclusion

 

Although Berkshire held the upper hand for large parts of the contest, particularly with their commanding first-innings batting display, Oxfordshire showed great resilience under pressure to bat out the final day. Both sides emerged with credit – Berkshire slightly ahead on points, but Oxfordshire demonstrating determination that will serve them well in the remainder of the Championship campaign.
