Celebrating 75 Years of The Lord’s Taverners: Empowering Young People Through Cricket

This year marks the 75th anniversary of The Lord’s Taverners, one of the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability charities. Since its founding in 1950, The Lord’s Taverners has transformed the lives of thousands of young people, providing opportunities to play cricket, develop new skills, and build confidence through sport.

In Berkshire, this mission is championed by Chris Baker, Berkshire Cricket’s Disability Officer, who has worked closely with the Lord’s Taverners to deliver inclusive cricket opportunities. Through programmes such as the Super 1s hubs, pan-disability squads, and table cricket sessions, Chris Baker has helped local young people with disabilities engage in cricket in a safe, supportive, and enjoyable environment.

“The Lord’s Taverners have been inspiring young people for three-quarters of a century,” said Chris Baker. “It’s a privilege to bring their vision to Berkshire, giving children and young adults the chance to play cricket regardless of their abilities. Sport can change lives, and these programmes make that a reality every week.”

The 75th-anniversary publication from The Lord’s Taverners celebrates decades of impact, featuring stories of inclusion, memorable cricketing moments, and the dedicated volunteers who make these programmes possible. Local initiatives in Berkshire are a shining example of this legacy, demonstrating how national support combines with local leadership to create lasting opportunities for young people.
