🌟 Staff Spotlight: Penelope Gwynne – Participation Coach
Meet Penelope Gwynne, one of Berkshire Cricket’s enthusiastic Participation Coaches, who joined the team in April 2025. Penelope plays a key role in introducing new audiences to cricket and helping people begin a lifelong love of the game.
About Her Role
Penelope works directly in schools, supporting children and young people as they take their first steps into cricket. Her work focuses on creating positive, welcoming experiences that spark enjoyment, confidence, and curiosity about the sport.
What She Loves Most
“The fact every day is filled with smiles and cricket!”
Her Sporting Journey
Penelope began playing softball cricket last season and loves the format for its inclusivity and fun.
She also coaches lacrosse for Phoenix Lacrosse in Newbury.
Previously a rugby player, Penelope now enjoys horse riding, running, and the occasional wild swim.
Favourite Cricketer
Freddie Flintoff – admired not just for his playing career, but for the work he has done since retiring, especially with children and for challenging perceptions around cricket.
Vision for Cricket
A return to proper, traditional cricket teas — bake-off-style cakes, strawberries, and sandwiches.
Penelope fondly remembers judging clubs just as much on their teas as their performances on the pitch!
Fun Fact
Penelope holds a Master’s degree in Military History.
Favourite Quote
“To every man upon this earth death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his Gods.”
— Thomas Babington Macaulay, Horatius
Berkshire Cricket is delighted to have Penelope helping inspire the next generation of players, combining enthusiasm, inclusivity, and a genuine love for sport.
