Berkshire produced a remarkable one-wicket victory over Wiltshire CCC in a dramatic encounter, chasing down 163 with just four balls remaining after teetering on the brink of defeat at 101-8.
After winning the toss, Berkshire were asked to field first and delivered an excellent bowling performance to restrict Wiltshire to 162-9 from their 50 overs. The hosts struggled for momentum throughout the innings as Berkshire’s disciplined attack kept wickets falling regularly.
Toby Greatwood made the early breakthrough, bowling Tom Cheater for 4 before Andy Rishton removed Jack Mynott for 12. Greatwood struck again to dismiss Jake Goodwin for just 1 as Wiltshire slipped to 23-3.
Charlie Dunnett then produced a superb spell through the middle overs, claiming 4-40 from his nine overs. He removed Ed Young for 12, Sam Ashman for 11, trapped Chris Aubrey lbw for 19 and later bowled Archie Fairfax-Ross for 11. Samm Daniel also chipped in with the wicket of Will Naish, while Berkshire’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure throughout.
Wiltshire’s innings was rescued by Alfie Johnson, who anchored the innings superbly with an unbeaten 54 from 90 balls, including four fours and two sixes. Archie Pascoe added 12 late on, but Berkshire’s attack never allowed Wiltshire to fully accelerate. Rishton was especially economical with 1-18 from 10 overs, while Daniel returned outstanding figures of 1-14 from his 10 overs.
Chasing 163 for victory, Berkshire’s reply began nervously. Johnny Connell fell lbw to Chris Aubrey for just 1, and wickets continued to tumble regularly. Rhys D Lewis battled for 24, while James Isbell struck a six in his 10 before falling to Ed Young.
Charlie Dunnett then counter-attacked magnificently with a fluent 47 from 53 balls, striking eight boundaries to revive the innings. However, Archie Pascoe tore through the middle order with a devastating spell of 5-15, removing Dunnett, Euan Woods, Ben Salter, Andrew MacEwen and Andy Rishton as Berkshire collapsed from 81-3 to 101-8.
With the match seemingly slipping away, Toby Greatwood produced an innings of composure and power under immense pressure. The Berkshire all-rounder struck an unbeaten 43 from 37 deliveries, including three fours and three sixes, keeping the chase alive alongside Samm Daniel, who contributed a crucial 19.
After Daniel fell with 26 runs still needed, Greatwood held his nerve brilliantly with number eleven Nilesh Bhandari for company. The pair edged Berkshire towards the target before Greatwood sealed a famous victory in the 35th over with another massive 6, finishing unbeaten as Berkshire reached 166-9 in 34.2 overs.
Despite Pascoe’s outstanding five-wicket haul and disciplined bowling from Chris Aubrey and Ed Young, Berkshire completed one of their most dramatic victories of the season, snatching victory by one wicket in unforgettable fashion. They have now booked a quarterfinal spot away to Buckinghamshire on the 7th June.
