Greatwood Record Ton and Historic Last-Wicket Stand Give Berkshire Winning Start
Berkshire made the perfect start to their NCCA Championship campaign with a hard-fought 5-wicket victory over Oxfordshire in an entertaining three-day contest at Falkland CC.
After being asked to bowl first, Berkshire’s attack worked tirelessly to dismiss Oxfordshire for 279. Despite recovering from 48-3 through Freddie Smith’s 65 and an excellent unbeaten 99 from Luke Hayes, Berkshire maintained control throughout the innings.
Lewis Sharp led the way with 3-41, while Euan Woods (2-93) and Samm Daniel (2-44) provided excellent support. Andy Rishton and Abdullah Iqbal also chipped in with a wicket apiece as Berkshire ensured Oxfordshire were unable to build an imposing first-innings total.
Berkshire’s reply began steadily before slipping to 132-7, with Oxfordshire seemingly on top. What followed was one of the most remarkable partnerships in Berkshire Championship history.
Toby Greatwood produced a magnificent innings of 158 not out – the highest NCCA Championship score of his Berkshire career – displaying outstanding composure, patience and controlled aggression across more than five hours at the crease. His innings, featuring 18 fours and four sixes, anchored Berkshire’s fightback.
Greatwood found a willing partner in number eleven debutant Abdullah Iqbal, and together the pair produced an extraordinary 94-run partnership for the tenth wicket to transform the innings. Iqbal’s contribution of 2 not out from 61 deliveries perfectly illustrated the determination and resilience required, frustrating the Oxfordshire attack while Greatwood capitalised at the other end.
Their record-breaking stand carried Berkshire to 308, securing a crucial 29-run first-innings lead and completely shifting the momentum of the match.
Oxfordshire responded positively in their second innings, with Luke Maslen making an impressive 95 and George Tait adding 44, but Berkshire’s bowlers again found a way back into the contest.
Samm Daniel claimed 3-50, while Rhys D Lewis produced an excellent spell of 3-9 to wrap up the innings. Euan Woods added two wickets as Oxfordshire were dismissed for 233, leaving Berkshire a target of 205 for victory.
The chase was not without its challenges as Berkshire slipped to 37-3, but Euan Woods produced a composed 70 to rebuild the innings before Toby Greatwood completed a memorable match with an unbeaten 55. Andrew MacEwen’s positive 26 not out ensured there would be no late drama as Berkshire reached 210-5 to secure victory with five wickets in hand.
It was a fitting conclusion to an outstanding opening Championship fixture, with Berkshire showing resilience, character and quality throughout all three days. Greatwood’s record-breaking innings and the unforgettable last-wicket partnership will rightly take the headlines, but the contributions with both bat and ball across the side laid the foundations for an excellent opening victory.
