Berkshire edge enthralling Devon encounter to claim 12 points at Blundell’s
Berkshire emerged from a captivating three-day Championship contest against Devon with the upper hand, taking 12 valuable points from the draw to Devon’s 11 after an entertaining match packed with high-quality cricket at Blundell’s School.
After Devon won the toss and posted a formidable 342, Berkshire responded superbly with 348 for 8 declared, before both sides set up an exciting final day that saw Berkshire finish strongly with 284 for 6 ensuring they left Devon with a crucial points advantage.
The visitors’ success was built around an outstanding all-round performance from Euan Woods, whose influence on the match was immense. Having already led Berkshire’s bowling attack with exceptional control to claim 4 for 63 in Devon’s first innings, Woods then produced the innings of the match with a magnificent 127. Displaying patience, composure and class, he occupied the crease for more than 200 deliveries and struck 19 boundaries in a knock that provided the platform for Berkshire’s first-innings lead.
Captain Rhys Lewis also continued his outstanding start to life as Berkshire skipper. After a composed first-innings half-century, Lewis lit up the final day with a scintillating 63 from just 45 balls, peppering the boundary with seven fours and three sixes.
Earlier in the match, Devon’s first innings had been anchored by Seb Linnitt (65) and Callum Harvey (68), but Berkshire’s bowlers shared the workload impressively. Woods’ four wickets were complemented by two apiece for Eddie Campion and Samm Daniel, while Ben Salter and Nilesh Bhandari also chipped in as Devon were dismissed for 342.
Berkshire’s reply suffered an early setback when Will Hamilton departed with only four runs on the board, but Lewis and Woods steadied the innings with an excellent partnership before Woods took centre stage. Charlie Dunnett added an invaluable 53, while Ben Salter (26), Toby Greatwood (21) and late contributions from Eddie Campion and Samm Daniel helped Berkshire edge ahead with a first-innings total of 348 for 8 declared.
Devon responded positively in their second innings, with Sam Elstone (88), James Horler (59) and Seb Linnitt (78 not out) all making significant contributions as the hosts declared on 374 for 5. Once again, Woods was Berkshire’s standout bowler, claiming two wickets while maintaining relentless accuracy across 27 overs, with Salter, Daniel and Bhandari also among the wickets.
Set an enterprising target on the final afternoon, Berkshire embraced the challenge. Lewis’s explosive start was followed by useful contributions from Will Hamilton (45), Woods (39), Ben Salter (29) and Toby Greatwood (29). Campion then played a sparkling unbeaten innings of 52 from 45 balls, striking nine fours and two sixes, while Andrew MacEwen calmly supported him with an unbeaten 17 as Berkshire finished on 284 for 6.
Although neither side could force a result, Berkshire will take enormous satisfaction from a performance that demonstrated resilience, attacking intent and maturity across all three days. Woods’ superb all-round display and Lewis’s dynamic captaincy were central to Berkshire edging the contest on points, providing another significant step forward in their NCCA Championship campaign.
