Berkshire is a member of ECB ACO’s South Central Region. Training and Development of Umpires and Scorers is critical to both the individual officials and to the game. In 2023, Berkshire initiated a Continuing Personal Development (CPD) programme to enable our officials to exercise their minds whether working by themselves, face-to-face, or in remote teams using digital technology, e.g. WhatsApp, Zoom, etc. These serve as an extension to the ECB ACO modules supporting our officials to develop and maintain their skills.

In the run-up to a new season, and at times during the season as well, our Education Team runs a series of CPD courses to improve the skills of match officials as they progress to becoming a panel umpire, or scorer in Berkshire, Thames Valley or Home Counties Leagues and perhaps even going all the way to serve on the National Panel and beyond.

We also help umpires and scorers to be the best they can be for their Club should they not wish to progress to a league panel.

In Berkshire, we have a sister organisation widely known as the BCOA (Berkshire Cricket Officials Association) see link below, which is also open to members from outside of the County and even non-umpire/scorer members. BCOA holds meetings, normally on the second Monday of each month. These meetings cover a variety of interests; guest speakers, training topics, Laws’ quizzes, and social events including BBQ’s.

The Association of Cricket Officials have launched a free Basics of umpiring course, this course is aimed at club umpires who just need to know the key laws and basic fieldcraft and those players who umpire 5 or 10 overs at the weekend. For ages 13 and over. See link below.
