Berkshire Cricket Celebrates 21 Years of Mark Roche’s Service

The 6th of September  marks a remarkable double anniversary in Berkshire’s cricketing story. On 6 September 2004, the Berkshire Men’s 1st XI lifted the NCCA Trophy—ending a 51-year wait for silverware. That very same day, a young community coach named Mark Roche began his first day of full-time employment with Berkshire Cricket.

Twenty-one years later, Mark is now Chief Executive, having dedicated more than two decades to serving the game across the Royal County. In that time, he has performed almost every role imaginable—supporting hundreds of clubs, thousands of volunteers, and tens of thousands of players—ensuring cricket not only grew, but flourished at every level.

What began in 2004 as a two-person team with then Cricket Development Officer (CDO) Andy Hobbs, has grown under Mark’s leadership into a professional staff of more than 20, delivering cricket in schools, clubs, and communities across Berkshire. From pioneering Chance to Shine programmes and coaching county age-group sides, to leading coach development and club support, Mark’s contribution has been as broad as it has been impactful.

When Andy Hobbs departed in 2006, Mark stepped up as CDO—a role that has evolved in name and responsibility over the years but one he has continued to fulfil with distinction. His major achievements include:

  • The Berkshire Cricket Centre – establishing a permanent hub for the game in the county.
  • The formation of the Berkshire Cricket Foundation – strengthening community outreach and development.
  • Merger with the County Club – unifying pathways and governance.
  • Chance to Shine County of the Year 2022 – a national accolade celebrating Berkshire’s tireless efforts in connecting communities through primary, secondary, and street cricket programmes.

Reflecting on his contribution, Jayne Haines, Chair of Berkshire Cricket, said:

“On behalf of the Board, I want to thank Mark for his extraordinary service and his unwavering belief in the power of cricket to connect and uplift. His leadership has shaped Berkshire Cricket in ways that go far beyond the boundary rope and we’re proud to celebrate this milestone with him.”

At Berkshire, investing in talent on and off the pitch has been a hallmark of success. Mark embodies that ethos—his leadership defined by hard work, humility, and a deep understanding of cricket’s role in community life.

So today, the county cricket family proudly raises its bats to Mark.

For the early mornings and late nights.

For the spreadsheets, the strategy, and the countless cups of tea.

For the quiet encouragement and the loud celebrations.

For 21 years of service—and all the innings still to come.

Thank you, Mark. Berkshire Cricket would not be the same without you.
