Berkshire Hold Nerve to Secure 23-Run Victory in High-Scoring Contest

Berkshire emerged victorious by 23 runs after a thrilling, high-scoring encounter that saw both sides post impressive totals in a match packed with momentum swings and standout individual performances.

Batting first, Berkshire posted a formidable 310 all out in 49.4 overs thanks to a series of significant contributions throughout the order. After Rhys Lewis fell early for 6, Johnny Connell provided early impetus with a lively 35 from 29 balls, striking six fours and a six to lift the scoring rate.

The backbone of the innings came from James Isbell, who produced a superb 92 from 85 deliveries. His innings combined authority and timing, featuring nine boundaries and five sixes, as he dominated the middle overs and laid the platform for a competitive total.

Isbell shared an important partnership with Charlie Dunnett, whose measured 49 from 65 balls ensured Berkshire maintained control through the middle stages. Euan Woods then added further momentum with a fluent 39 from 35 balls, while Ben Salter contributed a valuable 32.

Late runs proved equally important, with Samm Daniel striking an unbeaten 18 from just eight balls to push Berkshire beyond the 300 mark. Extras also played a role, contributing 28 runs to the final total.

Jack Plom, Tom Arnold, Ben Waring and Andrew Neal each claimed two wickets for Hertfordshire CC while Chinmay Mullapudi added one scalp.

In reply, the chase began steadily as Dominic Chatfield anchored the innings with a patient 60 from 91 deliveries. However, Berkshire’s fielding pressure produced an early breakthrough when Archie Harrison was run out.

Hertfordshire gathered momentum through Jacob Gordon, who played an aggressive innings of 76 from 66 balls, including nine fours and three sixes. His partnership with Chatfield put the chase firmly in contention and shifted pressure back onto Berkshire.

When Gordon fell at 149-2, Berkshire sensed an opportunity, but contributions from Finn Kelsey (27), Cole Seggery (24) and Benjamin Cowell (40 from 26 balls) ensured the game remained finely balanced heading into the closing overs.

With the required rate climbing, Berkshire’s bowlers and fielders held their composure. Toby Greatwood delivered the decisive spell, finishing with outstanding figures of 4-28 from 8.1 overs. His late wickets removed key hitters and halted the visitors’ momentum at a crucial stage.

Samm Daniel also made an impact with the ball, claiming 2-62, while Euan Woods and Charlie Dunnett chipped in with one wicket apiece. Berkshire were aided by two sharp run outs, reflecting a disciplined fielding effort in a pressure situation.

Hertfordshire were eventually bowled out for 287 in 49.1 overs, handing Berkshire a hard-earned 23-run victory in an entertaining contest that showcased strong batting depth and composure under pressure.
