Men’s 1st XI Storm into 50 Over Final

Berkshire Storm into 50-Over Final

Berkshire booked their place in the 50-over final with an outstanding 94-run victory over Oxfordshire at Wargrave Cricket Club in front of a fantastic home crowd.

Before anything else, a huge thank you must go to everyone at Wargrave CC for their wonderful hospitality and for producing an excellent venue. The support from the large crowd throughout the day created a brilliant atmosphere and played a huge part in making it a memorable occasion.

After winning the toss, Berkshire elected to bat first but found themselves under early pressure. Oxfordshire reduced the hosts to 68-4 inside 11 overs, with Hayden Rossouw claiming three early wickets to put Berkshire on the back foot.

What followed was a magnificent recovery led by Charlie Dunnett and Ben Salter. The pair combined superbly to rebuild the innings with a match-defining partnership, blending patience with positive stroke play as they steadily wrestled back control.

Dunnett was the standout performer, producing a superb 104 from 128 balls, his century including 12 boundaries in a composed and authoritative innings. Salter provided the perfect support, compiling an excellent 76 from 98 deliveries with eight fours and a six.

Late contributions from Andrew MacEwen, who finished unbeaten on 20 from just 13 balls, Andy Rishton (13) and Sulaiman Akhtar ensured Berkshire finished strongly, posting a competitive 285-8 from their 50 overs.

Oxfordshire’s chase never truly gathered momentum thanks to a disciplined Berkshire bowling attack. Andy Rishton struck first before Toby Greatwood removed Freddie Smith to leave the visitors 56-2.

The turning point came through Rhys D Lewis, who produced a brilliant spell to remove Luke Maslen and Hayden Rossouw in quick succession before also dismissing Zach Lion-Cachet. His figures of 3-17 from four overs broke the backbone of the Oxfordshire middle order.

Julian Laird battled hard with an excellent half-century, scoring 50, but Berkshire continued to chip away with wickets at regular intervals. Toby Greatwood impressed with 3-12 from four overs, while Andy Rishton claimed two wickets. Euan Woods bowled an economical spell of 10 overs, taking 1-37, before Samm Daniel wrapped up the innings by taking the final wicket.

Oxfordshire were eventually dismissed for 191 in 41.4 overs, giving Berkshire a comprehensive 94-run victory and sending them through to the 50-over final in impressive fashion.

It was a complete team performance, recovering brilliantly after a difficult start with the bat before producing an outstanding display in the field and with the ball. Berkshire now look forward to the final full of confidence after an excellent all-round performance.

Head coach, Bjorn Mordt, was full of praise for his young team and said this after the game “ These boys are very special, the way they play for each other and work so hard makes me proud. Once again this was a brilliant team effort but special praise must go to Dunnett and Salter who were incredible today. We now look forward to facing Cheshire in the final!”
