Berkshire face Wiltshire in important NCCA Championship clash
Berkshire Cricket return to NCCA Championship action this week when they welcome Wiltshire CCC to Henley-on-Thames CC for a key Western Division 1 fixture.
Berkshire currently sit third in the division with 35 points from two matches, having made an unbeaten start to their campaign with one win and one draw. Wiltshire are just behind them in fourth place on 28 points, also from two matches, making this an important fixture for both sides as they look to strengthen their position in the table.
Berkshire’s most recent Championship match ended in a draw against current leaders Devon on 2 August. Devon posted 374 for 5 declared in their first innings before Berkshire responded with 348 for 8 declared. Devon were then dismissed for 342 in their second innings, with Berkshire closing on 284 for 6 declared as the match ended with the points shared 12-11 in Berkshire’s favour.
That result followed an impressive opening-day victory over Oxfordshire, with Berkshire winning by five wickets on 12 July and collecting 23 points. The two results have left Berkshire unbeaten and just one point behind second-placed Oxfordshire, despite having played one fewer match than their rivals.
Wiltshire come into the fixture having experienced contrasting results in their opening two matches. They recorded an emphatic 233-run victory over Herefordshire on 26 July, earning 24 points, before suffering an innings-and-14-run defeat against Oxfordshire in their most recent game on 2 August.
The table remains tightly packed behind Devon, who currently lead with 58 points. Oxfordshire occupy second place on 36, Berkshire are third on 35 and Wiltshire fourth on 28, meaning a strong performance could have a significant impact on the standings.
For Berkshire, the immediate objective will be to build on their unbeaten start and convert their promising position into another positive result. A victory over Wiltshire would not only extend their advantage over the side immediately below them but could also move Berkshire into second place depending on Oxfordshire’s result.
With both teams having already demonstrated their ability to collect substantial points from their matches, the contest at Henley-on-Thames promises to be another important test as the Western Division 1 campaign develops.
