The Berkshire Over 50s launch their 2026 campaign with an eye-catching Bank Holiday fixture against Marylebone Cricket Club at Henley Cricket Club on Monday, May 4 (11:30am start).
Set against the picturesque backdrop of Henley-on-Thames, the match offers Berkshire’s senior side the perfect opportunity to ease into the new season with high-quality opposition. Traditionally one of the highlights of the pre-season calendar, encounters with MCC are known for their competitive spirit as well as their strong emphasis on the values and traditions of the game.
Captained by Duncan Johnson, Berkshire will be looking to fine-tune combinations and build early momentum ahead of a demanding summer schedule. With a blend of experienced county players and enthusiastic club cricketers, the Over 50s squad continues to reflect the strength and depth of senior cricket across the county.
Their opponents, MCC, remain one of the most prestigious names in world cricket. Founded in 1787 and based at Lord’s, the club continues to play a central role in promoting and preserving the game globally. True to that reputation, MCC will arrive at Henley with a well-balanced and competitive side, including a number of players with Minor Counties pedigree.

Adding further intrigue to the fixture is the inclusion of Claire Taylor MBE in the MCC line-up. One of England’s most decorated cricketers, Taylor was named both Wisden Cricketer of the Year and ICC Women’s Player of the Year during a distinguished international career. Her presence brings additional quality and experience to the contest, as well as a special attraction for spectators.
While the fixture is officially a friendly, both teams will be keen to put in a strong performance, making it an ideal showcase of the high standard of cricket played at the senior level. For Berkshire, it is also a valuable stepping stone ahead of their competitive season opener in the Over 50s County Championship.
That campaign begins just two days later, when Berkshire host Surrey at Royal Ascot Cricket Club on Wednesday, May 6 (2:00pm start). With little turnaround time between matches, the MCC game will play an important role in shaping selection decisions and match readiness.

Off the field, Henley Cricket Club will be providing a welcoming Bank Holiday atmosphere, with the bar open throughout the day and spectators encouraged to attend. The setting, combined with the quality of cricket on display, promises an enjoyable outing for players, members, and visitors alike.
Berkshire’s seniors have already had a busy start to the season, with three early fixtures providing valuable match practice. In the National 60+ Division 1 South, tough outings against Essex and Surrey Senior Cricketers Association saw Berkshire bowled out for 128 and 78 respectively, with both sides chasing comfortably. In a friendly at Bradfield Cricket Club, Berkshire Over 70s made 199 for 8, with Cheshire Cricket Board replying with 201 for 2 to win by two runs.
The Berkshire Seniors setup continues to go from strength to strength, currently running seven teams across the Over 50s, Over 60s, and Over 70s age groups. The section provides opportunities for players of all abilities to remain involved in competitive cricket, while also fostering a strong sense of community and camaraderie.
With an exciting season ahead and a prestigious opening fixture to set the tone, Berkshire Over 50s will be hoping to start their summer in style.
