🏏 October Half Term Chance to Shine Street Competition🏏

With teams across the county going head-to-head to be known as the best Street team in Berkshire. The under 12s played on Wednesday, 29th October followed by the under 15s competition on the 30th.

National champions, Langley A kicked off proceedings with a comfortable win against Chalvey in a local derby with is always a good fixture to watch. Chalvey posted 56 runs batting first, Shivi and Aadum making light work of the chase. Shivi stood out throughout the tournament with his clean striking, with bowling running out of ideas when coming up against him.

Langley A cruised through to the final, remaining undefeated in the group stage and beating Reading in their semi-final. Reading batted first, posting a modest 35 runs, giving the national champions a target of 36 runs to reach yet another final.  Once again, Shivi came out to bat with boundaries in mind and took a liking to the Reading bowling attack. Consecutive 6’s saw Langley A chase down their target, with 2 overs to spare, booking their place in the final.

Prospect, who had five players who were taking part in their first street tournament went up against Langley B in their semi-final clash. Langley B had beaten Prospect convincingly in the group stage, and many were resigned to an all Langley final. Langley B won the toss, choosing to bat first and posted 43 runs from their 5 overs, thanks to some disciplined bowling from Ajay. Prospect came out to bat with their sights set on a place in the final and surprised Langley B with their ball striking. Tom, Joe and Mikey who were the youngest in the tournament, played some fantastic shots, coupled with some very good running between the wickets saw Prospect chase their target down with 2 balls to spare.

The final would then be a clash between Prospect and Langley A, with the national champions confident of chasing any target, they won the toss and chose to bowl first. Disciplined lines and excellent fielding saw Prospect restricted to 40 runs in their first innings. As he had been doing all day, Shivi opened the batting with one thing in mind, boundaries! Smashing 4 consecutive 6’s to win the game for Langley A with 2 overs to spare.

In the under 15s competition The Warehouse, representing Reading East, kicked off with a convincing win against Chalvey, with Langley beating Reading School in the first round of group games. The stand out performers from The Warehouse were Abdul Wahad, who bowled with good pace and accuracy, and Salar Hashmi who found ways to score boundaries at will.

The Warehouse were the stand out team, remaining undefeated throughout their group games, posting a huge 92 runs against Reading School, a target that couldn’t be chased. Langley had only lost a single game, to The Warehouse in a close game.

The semi-finals saw Chalvey take on Langley, and The Warehouse take on Reading School. Langley batted first and posted 62 runs, which was just out of reach for Chalvey, who finished their innings on 51 runs. The Warehouse brushed aside Reading School in their semi-final, chasing their target of 41 in just 3 overs.

The final saw The Warehouse, who were undefeated, take on Langley. Langley winning the toss and choosing to bowl, feeling that their best chances of winning would be with a good first innings total for the bowlers to defend. Accurate bowling from Abdul Wahab and Ahmed Imran saw Langley restricted to 55 runs, at this stage The Warehouse thought they had the game in the bag. However, Langley’s bowlers came out and bowled well, not allowing Salar to free his hands and hit the boundaries that he had been scoring with ease. A flurry of wickets saw The Warehouse’s chase fall short of their target, finishing on 43 runs, crowning Langley as champions.

A successful couple of days for Langley, but all of our street teams can be extremely proud of their efforts. We saw lots of participants who were playing in their first competition, having been attending Street for the last 6 weeks which showcases what the programme is all about. We now look forward to the regional competition in the new year.
